welcome to two minds today with your

0:16

0:18
professional life
0:19
hello hello
0:21
hi Charlene how was your week it was
0:25
good it's a good week it's
0:27
um yeah I feel like back to school both
0:29
kids are in school now excellent so that
0:32
is pretty good back to school is always
0:34
exciting I think even if you don't have
0:36
kids there's something about that
0:39
heartbeat of summertime school time that
0:43
like you carry with you through your
0:44
entire life like even though like you
0:47
don't work you don't operate like that
0:48
anymore as an adult you still think
0:50
about oh it's back to school time yeah
0:52
there's like a seasonal there's a
0:54
seasonal flow we finished Labor Day and
0:56
absolutely some people I guess call this
0:58
fall it's 100 degrees by me uh 108
1:01
actually as I look at my computer
1:03
um
1:05
but I'm actually really intrigued by our
1:09
title for today it is who called me from
1:12
this number because I am like you know
1:15
the queen of not answering phone calls
1:17
even now my iPhone actually has like
1:20
slipped in who it is so like American
1:22
Red Cross I'm a blood donor calls me
1:23
every three and a half seconds
1:25
um and so it'll be like American Red
1:27
Cross and I'm like oh okay thank you
1:29
I'll I'll schedule um I don't answer the
1:31
call I'm like and reject and I'll
1:33
schedule on my own time so in this day
1:36
of like where we know networking is so
1:38
important and I I'm not answering my
1:40
phone to people I don't know or even
1:41
people I do know
1:43
um we thought we would dive into
1:45
networking and and I know this is just
1:48
full disclaimer on this episode this is
1:50
your Zone you're such a great Community
1:52
Builder
1:53
um and um I'm excited to learn from you
1:57
today
1:58
thanks so much Charlene yeah it's so
2:00
true I agree with you like we're so
2:02
reticent these days not just to answer
2:04
the phone even to like respond to emails
2:06
or text any form of communication yeah
2:08
unless I know beforehand who it is we
2:11
don't want to we don't want to connect
2:13
with that person but you know okay so
2:15
we're talking about networking and the
2:17
reason we call this who called me from
2:19
this number because because I think one
2:20
of the biggest secrets to being a
2:22
networker to having a good network is to
2:26
be a connector and normally when you
2:28
think about networking you think about
2:30
going to an event where you get to meet
2:32
a lot of people that's called networking
2:34
I think the ultimate networking though
2:37
is in being a great connector meaning
2:39
that you hear of somebody who wants a
2:42
florist and you introduce them to a
2:44
florist you hear of somebody who wants
2:46
this kind of product and you introduce
2:48
them to somebody else who you know is
2:50
selling that kind of product or thinking
2:52
about a business with that kind of
2:54
product and even though that doesn't
2:56
seem like your network working the
2:59
reality is that that people see you as
3:02
the epicenter of someone who knows
3:04
people and who can be who who knows
3:08
everybody and can connect you to
3:10
everybody so all of a sudden you'll get
3:12
a phone call from someone and you're
3:13
like uh who is this I I have no idea but
3:16
meanwhile somebody else connected you
3:18
now because they know that you know
3:20
everyone and their mother yeah and I
3:23
think it's it's and I've seen you do
3:25
this by the way many times of of
3:27
connecting other people and that I just
3:30
want to say I've heard a tip of if
3:32
you're actually in a room and you're
3:34
socially awkward this is a great thing
3:36
to do uh when like if Helen and I were
3:38
standing around talking and like I feel
3:40
like I don't I'm awkward and I don't
3:42
know I haven't run out of conversation I
3:44
turn to another person and be like oh
3:46
John have you met Heller and um so a
3:50
little tip for our introverts out there
3:52
is like it's also like an easier segue
3:55
conversation and then you're gonna have
3:57
to carry the conversation as much so
4:00
interesting I didn't know that that was
4:03
a trick but I have recently started to
4:06
think that I'm actually an introvert
4:08
that has thought I was an extrovert my
4:10
whole life because I have always done
4:13
that and I do always feel very awkward
4:16
in these major networking situations so
4:19
like maybe I found the trick without
4:21
even knowing it but I am always
4:23
connecting to I'm like oh let me
4:25
introduce you to someone so let's come
4:27
and let's talk to each other but yep I
4:29
agree with everything everything you
4:31
said so this one I can speak to because
4:33
I
4:34
um I I am socially awkward
4:37
um and I'm a weird extroverted introvert
4:39
which we can get into at one time
4:41
absolutely
4:42
um but I feel like um hard work equals
4:46
networking right it's like the idea that
4:48
you know you can't get further if you're
4:50
not really good at what you're doing so
4:52
like just and that's really about
4:54
building your brand brand unless in a
4:57
showy Flash marketing way but in a more
5:00
of how people can rely on you way
5:03
it's so interesting that you said when I
5:05
first started as an attorney my
5:09
um the head of our department he was
5:11
like fabulous attorney everybody knew
5:13
him incredibly like you know the whole
5:16
town I was in Philadelphia and he was
5:18
like be it Philadelphia real estate
5:20
attorney and he said the heck with
5:23
networking forget about going out there
5:25
and being in the bar association and
5:27
meeting so and so and connecting with
5:29
the other one just do your job and do it
5:33
well and when you're the top at what you
5:36
do everybody will come to you so it
5:38
might not happen day one or two you
5:41
might not seem like you've got everyone
5:42
around you but over five to ten years
5:45
all of a sudden like you've established
5:48
how great you are what you do everyone
5:50
else comes I think it's the real deal
5:53
it's authentic Charlene yeah I think I
5:55
wanna I 100 feel that way and then I
5:58
want a flag that this only works if you
6:01
if you're using that in combination with
6:04
telling your own story telling your
6:06
successes if you're the kind of person
6:08
we've talked about this on a few other
6:09
episodes that never ever and takes the
6:12
credit never you're never gonna that's
6:14
never gonna work right yeah so I think
6:17
it works really well in tandem with
6:22
accurately you know taking credit not
6:25
taking more or less or you know and
6:27
really being able to stand up for
6:28
yourself and and also this really works
6:31
when you're past imposter syndrome
6:32
because I I think I think those are
6:34
things that impede people's perception
6:37
of you and your hard work
6:39
um but that's gonna be putting down what
6:42
you do you can't be apologizing you
6:44
can't be you know taking more of a blame
6:47
when there's a mistake when it's
6:48
actually not yours 100 I agree with you
6:51
that's a really bad one Charlene yeah
6:54
um so I'm excited by this okay so
6:57
someone recently shared with me
6:58
essentially LinkedIn is your modern day
7:01
networking like the LinkedIn page
7:06
um and post page is is like the
7:09
equivalent of when we used to go and I
7:12
think maybe some people still do go into
7:13
big rooms and and meet in chat and I
7:17
find this um terrifying from like a oh
7:20
my gosh I have to put myself out there
7:21
on social media
7:23
um perspective and also like oh yeah
7:26
that is probably accurate
7:28
um from so many from so many ways I
7:30
don't know have you thought about this
7:31
at all Helen well I could tell you that
7:34
um I have a very interesting comeback to
7:36
law story I worked in the big law world
7:39
for a number of years and then I left
7:42
for about 15 years to do other things I
7:46
wrote a book I worked in the non-profit
7:47
world and then I tried to come back into
7:49
big law Charlene that's almost an
7:52
impossible Trek back it just really very
7:55
rarely happens and I was able to do it
7:58
and be the reason I was able to do it
8:00
was because of LinkedIn would it happen
8:02
was when I originally got into LinkedIn
8:04
I connected with everybody that I knew
8:07
from my previous life so I'd gotten into
8:09
LinkedIn you know this is 10 years right
8:11
at least 10 years before I'm looking to
8:14
get back into law I had gone into
8:16
LinkedIn and I linked with people that I
8:19
knew in my you know from my days and not
8:21
in my Law Firm days right yeah I wasn't
8:24
looking to do law I wasn't interested in
8:26
it I was like all right you know if
8:28
LinkedIn is it's the world of people I
8:30
know I'm going to connect with everyone
8:31
professionally meanwhile I I had
8:35
connected at that time with the head of
8:37
my department uh who was and linked you
8:40
know so he had seen over these seven
8:44
years the fact that I'd written a book
8:45
he saw that uh that I was like involved
8:48
and out in the world he saw that I
8:50
started going back into law and so when
8:54
I applied in the big firm world to come
8:57
back and I said to him hey do you mind
8:59
pulling my resume out of the pile like I
9:01
did Reach Out to him he's like of course
9:04
I've been watching you over the years I
9:06
saw that you wrote this book I was
9:08
shocked I was shocked that he even like
9:10
but I guess I came up on a stream
9:12
occasionally right and so it reminded
9:15
him of who I was and I was actually in
9:17
that so 100 Network and I got back in I
9:22
got back in because of LinkedIn I've
9:24
heard social presence so now you know
9:27
all these reality shows so even the
9:30
cooking ones so there was somebody who
9:33
um was posting about they went on one of
9:34
the I think it was a cookie insert
9:36
whatever the reality show is about here
9:38
and now they're casting based on your
9:41
Instagram and influencers or whatever it
9:43
is so if you do not have a social
9:46
presence you are probably not gonna get
9:48
cast on One of These reality TV shows
9:50
and and I think it is you know it's just
9:54
sort of this world we're living in and I
9:56
smell tip I think you need to have 500
9:58
connections connects with us on LinkedIn
10:02
um but it's and then and then they said
10:05
it's you know 500 plus is all the same
10:07
but
10:08
um it's yeah I think it's just sort of a
10:11
matter of of fact of of how we Network
10:14
it this is just a part of it in 2023 and
10:17
I and I and I wonder if there's like
10:19
just a little bit of like social norming
10:21
around what I would think are really
10:24
cringy posts like oh my gosh
10:25
congratulations but like I think that
10:27
that's you know that social Norm is is
10:30
when you're there
10:32
here's what I would say and he'll tell
10:34
me if you disagree great there's
10:35
different rules of engagement when you
10:37
are at a networking event then what you
10:38
would probably do in your own social
10:40
life right you know you're going in to
10:42
this room in real life in real person to
10:45
person you're going to and people are
10:46
going to be pitching themselves and it's
10:49
sort of like this acceptability and
10:51
versus like when you're you know
10:52
standing in line at your kids soccer
10:54
game it's a little bit different and I
10:57
think LinkedIn is that place where
10:58
people know you are going and you're
11:00
putting your best foot forward and and
11:01
you're presenting yourself a little bit
11:04
so I just I wonder that I do think that
11:06
there is an industry-specific Behavior
11:09
with this and also generational specific
11:12
behavior so
11:14
um and so that makes it a little bit
11:16
tricky right and I my advice is always
11:20
try and keep it as professional as
11:21
possible when you're on LinkedIn and try
11:24
and have some kind of a presence but not
11:25
too much you have to be careful because
11:28
certain industries would find certain
11:30
posts not really classy and professional
11:33
and so it's it's a little bit tricky
11:38
um I assume everybody knows everything
11:40
because like random people I barely know
11:42
will like something and it'll flash up
11:44
this person liked this so just be super
11:46
conscious of that all right all right
11:50
our net ring who called me from this
11:52
member so let's talk about how we feel
11:54
networking is coming around in 2023 so
11:58
hello take us uh for the wrap up
12:01
all right so hey be a connector yourself
12:04
do the good deed connect people to each
12:06
other it's a round World it'll come back
12:08
and you'll see that that's become a form
12:10
of networking for you
12:11
be authentic as always I think this is
12:14
Charlene's like go-to line I like I try
12:16
and like internalize it and bring my
12:18
inner Charlene to everything hard work
12:20
really at the end of the day is the most
12:23
authentic form of networking it might
12:25
take a little bit longer to build but it
12:27
really does pay off and the last modern
12:29
day networking get on LinkedIn get on
12:32
social media have a presence it's you
12:34
know it is the equivalent of sitting
12:36
around in a big conference you know at a
12:39
meeting and bringing lots of people
12:40
together so
12:42
you could do it even from your own home
