0:17
hello
0:18
good afternoon Charlene how you doing
0:21
I'm good how are you doing I am good
0:24
it's good to be back here at end of the
0:26
week this time but yeah miss that this
0:29
felt like a a lot packed in we are going
0:34
through religious holidays right now
0:37
it's like the season
0:39
um and um so so there's just like a lot
0:42
happening
0:43
it's true it's true and it gets it gets
0:46
a little bit crazy that back to school
0:48
season and everything else going on it's
0:51
true yes which actually I think led to
0:54
the topic for today because it was on
0:56
the Forefront of our minds is balancing
0:59
Faith identity and work and and really
1:01
the conversation that Hawaii you and I
1:03
were having was do you bring your whole
1:06
self to the workplace so why don't why
1:08
don't we start there what does that even
1:10
mean to you okay okay well I'll start
1:13
with legally right legally by law
1:16
employers are uh are required to respect
1:20
your whole self your cultural background
1:22
your religious background your sexual
1:24
identity your you know your sexuality
1:27
whatever it is the employer is required
1:30
by law to respect it but requirement by
1:33
law is very different than the Practical
1:36
effect of when you're at work so what is
1:38
it what does it mean when you're at work
1:40
do you actually you know take advantage
1:43
of these laws that are there to protect
1:45
us do you actually say Hey listen it's
1:46
my religious holiday I know nobody else
1:48
is taking a break but I'm out of here
1:50
even though there's a big deal going on
1:51
right now would you take off in that
1:54
case Charlene yeah I think that
1:58
at different ages and stages I've
2:00
probably made different
2:02
um
2:03
uh different choices I feel like my
2:06
hardest time was actually like through
2:08
University
2:09
um was I found that the most difficult
2:11
time to just be like goodbye and and I
2:15
wonder if that really just comes from
2:18
you know there's like power dynamics
2:21
involved and I wonder how much all of
2:22
this is stemming from our uncertainty
2:25
with the being
2:27
and living in a world where we're not
2:30
sure how people are going to respond and
2:32
just this you know last week I had a
2:34
conversation with my son about we had
2:37
hockey practice and it was like not
2:38
during services but it was still on a
2:40
religious day and what were we gonna do
2:43
and you know I know he was really
2:45
nervous for me to email the coach and be
2:47
like hey you know this just just like
2:51
sometimes that and this is like to me
2:53
the saddest part that that this the
2:55
saddest part is that this is even a
2:57
question right like yeah we should all
2:59
and I'm gonna respect your holidays
3:01
you're gonna respect my holidays you're
3:02
going to respect my identity and and all
3:04
respect your identity and all of these
3:06
things that that come with it and we
3:08
don't live in a world where we're like
3:09
oh no what are they going to say because
3:10
of X Y or Z now of course I emailed the
3:13
coach and the coach was like great
3:14
thanks for letting me know like
3:15
literally zero problems but we Build It
3:19
Up in our head to be like how how many
3:21
people am I letting down
3:24
I think that's true and I think that it
3:27
has a lot to do with our confidence and
3:29
our sense of self and in America I do
3:32
think that a lot of people's identity is
3:34
wrapped into the profession that they
3:36
have and I think part of this becomes a
3:39
struggle between what is your identity
3:41
is your identity this new professional
3:43
identity that you're creating through
3:45
your career or is your identity the
3:48
cultural religious sexual Heritage
3:51
background whatever it is that you have
3:54
um I actually think that like your your
3:57
coach like your hockey coach was most
4:00
people are respectful if you say this is
4:03
my religious holiday I can't come I have
4:06
yet to meet an employer or anybody say
4:09
no to that or have a problem with it the
4:12
only time in my experience there is a
4:14
problem with it is if you don't do your
4:16
work if you you know if you've had a lot
4:20
of other days off right then it becomes
4:23
a problem but if you're set up your
4:26
fellow employer you know your your
4:28
colleagues and you've done all your work
4:30
you've set everybody up you're not
4:32
taking off every other day
4:34
I don't believe that anybody really has
4:37
a problem with it they have a certain
4:38
amount of respect if you know who you
4:40
are and you stand your ground I I think
4:43
you jumped into exactly what the the
4:46
second topic is it's communication and
4:48
preparedness which you and I have talked
4:49
about uh probably a dozen times right
4:52
and this is like similar to when you're
4:54
going away on vacation how are you
4:55
setting people up for success and you
4:59
know for for an example of Archer and
5:01
ice time like okay so he lost that ice
5:03
time where is he making it up
5:06
um for us at work okay you know you're
5:08
gonna be absent
5:11
um that day how do you and I'm not
5:13
saying you have to like take on a
5:15
different eight hours a different day I
5:17
think it's just how are you
5:18
communicating because I think like like
5:21
I just want to live in a world where
5:22
like I you know okay so I Monday is a
5:26
holiday so I'm gonna take off Monday but
5:27
you're gonna take off three weeks from
5:29
now for a different holiday and we're
5:31
just gonna that's just gonna be it
5:35
um I know we touched upon this on the
5:36
last podcast that we talked about I do
5:38
think a lot of this has to do with
5:39
relationships because no matter how much
5:42
you communicate effectively and you say
5:45
something you might as a person feel
5:47
that you don't have
5:48
um the confidence to or you know
5:52
to to be able to take off that time
5:54
without being judged by it and you were
5:57
talking about these power dynamics if
5:59
you have a relationship with someone
6:00
that's positive and good that power
6:02
Dynamic differential kind of doesn't
6:05
feel as strong and you know where it
6:06
matters and where it doesn't and if you
6:09
don't have that collegial relationship
6:11
not just like effective communication
6:13
but something where you feel comfortable
6:16
and confident with your boss with your
6:19
co-workers with your colleagues then it
6:21
doesn't become as big of an issue I
6:24
actually love what you just said tonight
6:25
and I think it should be our third point
6:27
which is confidence because I I just
6:29
wonder how much of all of the questions
6:32
surround confidence and maybe what are
6:35
some ideas we can give people to gain
6:38
that confidence when when it's missing
6:40
and and this is about bringing any part
6:43
of yourself to work
6:45
um because I really feel we live whole
6:47
lives and it's not like we can be like
6:49
okay this very serious thing happened to
6:52
me and now I'm turning it off and I I
6:54
think there was decades where that was
6:56
the case but I just don't think in 2023
6:58
that's where we are so how would you
7:00
suggest someone gain confidence in there
7:02
on another day we're going to talk about
7:04
Severance have you watched that no
7:06
oh my gosh yeah that that's interesting
7:09
we'll leave that for another time with
7:10
respect to bringing your whole self or
7:12
not okay how do you gain confidence at
7:14
work
7:15
um God bless people who naturally have
7:16
it because there are people who
7:18
naturally do I think if you don't have
7:19
confidence make a friend who does have
7:22
confidence at work it doesn't
7:23
necessarily have to be someone who is a
7:26
mentor to you it could be just somebody
7:28
else who's filled with confidence
7:29
because then when you say to them oh my
7:31
God I'm really not sure about this
7:33
you're going to say what are you talking
7:35
about you can do it go for it it's not a
7:37
big deal a tick tock going around for a
7:39
while of every introvert should have an
7:41
extroverted buddy to like ask the store
7:44
for help
7:46
um yeah so I I love that and continuing
7:49
along the theme of relationships
7:51
um let's say you're trying to ask for a
7:53
day off for a religious holiday
7:55
um and and this is something you were
7:57
really nervous about
7:59
um I know role playing is like the most
8:00
awkward thing in the world but I think
8:02
role playing with another person is
8:04
better than I don't know if you're like
8:05
up at night like replaying it or even
8:07
worse replaying it after you already did
8:09
it in your head 700 times and so just
8:12
you know write out a little script for
8:13
yourself find someone to go over it with
8:16
and and then you know state it
8:19
confidently and I think there's also
8:21
something to be said for
8:24
um by taking the days we need we are
8:27
going to do a better job on the days we
8:30
are there because otherwise people and
8:32
if you're a supervisor or someone
8:34
um you're in play will just end up being
8:35
resentful of you right they're just
8:37
gonna say like forget it I'll find
8:39
somewhere else I agree with you and
8:41
being a fan of Technology when it can be
8:44
good for you I look I think you can also
8:46
role play with Siri and role play with
8:48
chat gbt you know what I
8:51
I like ask it to ask me questions where
8:54
I'm like if I'm like I'm like I'm
8:55
thinking about this problem what
8:57
questions should I ask okay 100 right
9:00
and as always by the way folks do it in
9:03
as advanced time as possible like if you
9:05
want to you know if you want to take off
9:06
on Monday please don't go asking on
9:08
Friday or Thursday if you know it's a
9:10
religious holiday that's coming you
9:12
could even say it at the very beginning
9:13
of the year like you know these are the
9:15
days that I'm gonna be off because these
9:17
are my religious holidays I'm not going
9:19
to be here put me on projects you know
9:21
that aren't necessarily you know being
9:23
highlighted at that time because if your
9:25
employer knows those are the terms of
9:27
the employment then that's fine and you
9:29
can also say Hey listen in return since
9:32
I'm taking this holiday but I don't do
9:34
the other one I'll come in on
9:35
Thanksgiving I used to work every
9:37
Christmas right yeah and I think in
9:40
those cases a lot of times employees end
9:42
up valuing you and appreciating the fact
9:44
that you're putting in time where they
9:46
don't need to worry about when they take
9:47
off I would say my last thing is
9:49
consistency and transparent fancy like
9:51
it's not going to work if you've been at
9:53
a company for five years and says oh all
9:55
of a sudden the first year if you have
9:57
become more religious or you have become
9:58
you know if your identity has changed in
10:01
any way then that's a conversation with
10:03
your supervisor of hey I know I've been
10:05
here four years
10:06
um I this is like just letting you know
10:08
in my personal life I'm starting to
10:09
practice x y and z
10:11
um is it possible you know I'd like to
10:13
now make these accommodations
10:15
um but but so just really like that
10:17
transparency if this is the first time
10:19
you're doing it
10:21
um because I really think people
10:22
appreciate a journey of any kind and
10:25
being
10:27
um in the loop of it and and knowing
10:29
like okay this is where my employees are
10:33
at and that's great and I want to
10:34
support that because I think at the end
10:35
of the day people do actually want to
10:38
support you
10:40
um yeah I think so I think so maybe
10:42
maybe not all right so we're gonna
10:44
summarize this and make it not your
10:46
family fantastic workplace and we can
10:47
talk about that at a different time
10:48
that's right we can talk about bringing
10:50
your whole self or not to work on
10:52
another day completely but with respect
10:54
to religious holidays and taking it you
10:57
know and taking off again communication
10:59
communication communication is key try
11:02
and do it ahead of time if you can
11:04
um set your colleagues up as we've
11:06
talked about before and confidence how
11:08
do you gain that confidence role play
11:10
great idea that Charlene Gabe find
11:13
yourself a buddy you know every
11:15
non-confident person should have a
11:16
confident friend
